An angel once lay 'neath my heart,

The skeletal remains of Jennifer Shafiq's body were found in 1996 by a hiker in a wooded area of Manorville, one mile east of a Long Island Expressway exit, said Suffolk Police Officer Mark Collins.
The remains were finally identified in 2005 as that of Shafiq, who was beaten to death in 1990, a police news release states.
The family lived in the Hollis area in the New York City borough of Queens at the time of her death.
Collins said police were able to arrest the parents Monday after a confession by Singh, who was recently arrested in Sacramento on charges related to domestic disturbance.
"He reported to authorities that the wife had committed the (homicide)," Collins said.
There was a history of the child being abused.
The girl was removed from her parents and placed in foster care when she was 1 month old, but returned three years later, he said.
Authorities believe Abdul was the abuser, Collins said.
While a motive for the killing remains unclear, Singh told authorities that his wife had shaken Shafiq and thrown her on the floor, Collins said.
Singh did not indicate to authorities whether he tried to stop his wife from hurting the child, he said.
Collins said police do not know why Singh decided to come forward with the information after more than a decade.
Abdul and Singh were taken into custody and are awaiting extradition to Long Island, which is expected to take about two weeks, Collins said.
Police are continuing their investigation, he said.
